Nail Art by Charlotte

The face behind the nail art

My name is Charlotte Bäcklund and I have worked at Depend for ten years.

I am a trained nail technician and hugely passionate about nail art.

I began as a saleswoman, and today work with anything and everything to do with nail polish. Colours, names, texts and images – my primary aim is to inspire you!

Good luck and remember that there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to nail decoration. You are the artist!

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 477 (beige/grey).

Step 3. Once the polish has dried, apply two thin coats of O2 no. 472 (orange) to half the nail. To create a sharp line, we recommend using decoration tape.

Step 4. Once that has dried, apply O2 no. 467 (pink) diagonally across both the other colours.

Step 5. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Blue & Green

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of base coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of green nail polish (no. 469) to the thumb, ring finger and little finger. Apply two thin coats of blue nail polish (no. 471) to the middle finger and index finger.

Step 3. Once the polish has dried, apply two thin coats of the blue polish to the nails you have painted green, and green polish to the nails you have painted blue. Apply the polish starting a little way in from the cuticle, so that some of the colour underneath is visible – like a French manicure but along the cuticle.

Step 4. Finish with top coat.

Blue Mix

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 474 (mauve).

Step 3. Now apply Matte Top Coat.

Step 4. Once the polish has dried, draw two thin lines across the nail, creating an ‘X’. For this step, use O2 no. 469 (blue) and a nail art brush.

Step 5. Using the nail art brush, fill in the spaces between the blue lines with O2 no. 469 (blue).

Step 6. Now draw a white line straight through the ‘X’ using white art liner or O2 no. 031 (white) and a nail art brush.

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of base coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of Minilac no. 466 (apricot).

Step 3. Apply a thin layer of Matte Top Coat (no. 304).

Step 4. Now add lines right across the nail, creating a checked pattern. To do this, use white art liner or a nail art brush and Minilac no. 031 (white).

Step 5. Where the lines meet, add dots using a dotting tool and Minilac no. 031 (white).

Puzzle

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 465 (beige).

Step 3. Once the polish has dried, apply two thin coats of O2 no. 458 (green). Begin a little way up the nail so that you can still see about one third of the beige polish. To create a sharp line, we recommend using decoration tape.

Step 4. Use a dotting tool to add dots of green polish to the beige section of nail where the two colours meet.

Step 5. Do the same thing with the beige polish on the opposite (green) side of the line.

Step 6. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Holiday Colours

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Now apply two thin coats of O2 no. 031 (white) to the nails you wish to decorate. We opted for the middle finger on one hand and the ring finger on the other.

Step 3. Apply two thin coats of O2 no. 453 (red) or O2 no. 459 (green) to the remaining nails.

Step 4. Once the polish has dried, apply two thin coats of the red polish to the nails you have painted white. Begin a little way up the nail so that you can still see about one third of the white polish.

Step 5. Once the red polish has dried, apply two thin coats of the green polish over it, starting a little way up the nail again so that one third of the nail is still red.

Step 6. In order to separate the three colours, we have added stripes between them, producing a silver edge. Use a small pair of scissors to cut the stripe tape to length.

Step 7. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Black & silver

Step 1. Clean the nails with 7day Cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a thin coat of 7day Protecting Base.

Step 3. Apply a thin coat of the 7day polish Goth Black (no. 7013) to all nails.

Step 4. When you are ready to apply a second coat of Goth Black, do this one finger at a time. As soon as you have applied the second coat, drip the 7day polish I Stole the Silver (no. 7057) on to the black polish.

Step 5. Once the polish has dried, finish off with two coats of 7day Hybrid Top.

Reversed French

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 461 (pale grey) to the nails on one hand. The base colour for the other hand is O2 no. 465 (beige).

Step 3. Once the polish has dried, apply two thin coats of O2 no. 462 (dark blue) to the hand with the pale grey nails, and O2 no. 464 (wine red) to the other hand. Apply the polish starting a little way in from the cuticle, so that some of the colour underneath is visible – like a French manicure but along the cuticle.

Step 4. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Christmas stripe

Step 1. Clean the nails with 7day Cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a thin coat of 7day Protecting Base.

Step 3. Apply two thin coats of the 7day polish Feel Like a Million (no. 7056) to the ring finger.

Step 4. Apply two thin coats of the 7day polish Fancy Pants (no. 7064) to the remaining nails.

Step 5. Once the polish has dried, apply pieces of stripe tape to the ring finger, creating lines right across the nail.

Step 6. Once you have attached the tape, apply a thin coat of Fancy Pants to the entire nail.

Step 7. Now carefully remove the tape.

Step 8. Finish off with two coats of 7day Hybrid Top.

Reindeer sweater

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 460 (dark grey) to the nails.

Step 3. Now use white art liner or a nail art brush and Minilac no. 031 (white) to create your chosen pattern.

Step 4. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Black & Gold

Step 1. Clean the nails with 7day Cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a thin coat of 7day Protecting Base.

Step 3. Apply two thin coats of the 7day polish Goth Black (no. 7013) to the thumb and middle finger.

Step 4. Apply a thin coat of Feel Like a Million (no. 7056) to the remaining nails.

Step 5. Apply a second coat of Feel Like a Million and, working on one nail at a time, apply the small glitter dots to the gold polish before it dries. The easiest way to do this is with an orange stick dipped in top coat. Use this to pick up the glitter and apply it to the nail. If the gold polish starts to dry, apply a thin layer of top coat to make the nail wet again, so the glitter can adhere to it.

Step 6. Apply two coats of 7day Hybrid Top to all nails.

Step 7. Next apply matte top coat to the black nails.

Step 8. Use the piercing drill to make a hole for attaching the dangle.
Tip: make the hole from underneath while resting the nail on the table. Remember to always protect the table’s surface to avoid the drill leaving a mark.
Once you have made the hole, attach the dangle.

Green Bling

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Now apply two thin coats of O2 no. 458 (green) to two of the nails and O2 no. 465 (beige) to another two of the nails.

Step 3. Apply two thin coats of each colour to the middle finger, half and half.

Step 4. Apply rhinestones to the polish before it dries. The easiest way to do this is with an orange stick dipped in top coat. Use this to pick up the stones and apply them to the nail. If the polish starts to dry, apply a thin layer of top coat to make the nail wet again, so the stones can adhere to it.

Step 5. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Christmas blue

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of no. 420 (blue).

Step 3. Before the polish dries, create your chosen pattern using a variety of rhinestones. The easiest way to do this is with an orange stick dipped in top coat. Use this to pick up the rhinestones and apply them to the nail.

Step 4. Use white art liner (decoration lacquer) to create additional patterns.

Step 5. Finish off with Top Coat.

You rock

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of base coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of no. 039 (black).

Step 3. Now apply a thin layer of matte top coat to one nail. Before the polish dries, create your chosen pattern using the rivets. The easiest way to do this is with an orange stick dipped in top coat. Use this to pick up the rivets and apply them to the nail. Now continue with the other nails you want rivets on, one at a time.

Step 4. It’s a similar process for the nails you want black glitter on. Before the polish dries, sprinkle over the glitter or dip your finger in the jar of glitter. Tip: to make your manicure last longer, apply normal top coat to the nails with glitter.

Step 5. If applying stickers to nails, leave the top coat to dry before applying them.

Step 6. Use the piercing drill to make a hole for attaching the dangle.
Tip: make the hole from underneath while resting your nail on the table. Remember to always protect the table’s surface to avoid the drill leaving a mark.
Once you have made the hole, attach the dangle.

Stripe your nails

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply a thin coat of no. 223 (silver).

Step 3. Once the polish has dried, apply pieces of stripe tape to create a checked pattern.

Step 4. Using a nail art brush, apply the two polishes 039 (black) and 4041 (pink from the Metallic range) to the checked pattern you created using the tape.

Step 5. Once you have filled in the squares, carefully remove the tape.

Step 6. Finish off with Top Coat.

Black & glitter

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 039 (black).

Step 3. Apply the small glitter strips to the black polish before it dries. The easiest way to do this is with an orange stick dipped in top coat. Use this to pick up the glitter and apply it to the nail. If the black polish starts to dry, apply a thin layer of top coat to make the nail wet again, so the glitter can adhere to it.

Step 4. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Pink spiderweb

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 438 (pink).

Step 3. Use a nail art brush and O2 no. 455 (purple) to create the webs.

Step 4. Use two purple stones from a Decoration Kit (art. no. 6680) to create the spider’s body.
For the spider’s legs, I used black art liner, but you can also use the purple nail polish to do this.

Step 5. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Stitches

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of O2 Protecting Base Coat.

Step 2. Next apply two thin coats of O2 no. 465 (beige).

Step 3. Using a nail art brush, apply the two shades of red, O2 no. 453 and no. 464, creating wounds on your nails. Mix these two shades until you have a blood red shade which you are happy with.

Step 4. Use black art liner to create stitches across the wounds. I have used a dotting tool to add dots where the stitches ‘enter’ the nail.

Step 5. Finish off with O2 Glossy Top Coat.

Hope

Step 1. Clean your nails with 7day Cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a thin coat of 7day Protecting Base.

Step 3. Next apply two thin coats of the 7day polish Pink Mania (no. 7047).

Step 4. Using white art liner, paint the letters on your nails.

Step 5. Now mix a drop of top coat with loose decoration glitter (art. no. 1653).
Tip! I used a small piece of foil, on to which I dripped the polish and then sprinkled the glitter.
Once you have mixed the two to your liking, use this glitter polish to create the pink ribbon.

Step 6. Finish off with two coats of 7day Hybrid Top.

Negative space – black & red

Step 1. Clean your nails with 7day Cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a thin coat of 7day Protecting Base.

Step 3. Create the pattern/shape you want by applying the black nail polish 7day Goth Black (no. 7013) and the red polish 7day Bulletproof Love (no. 7067). Apply two thin coats of each.

Step 2. Apply two thin coats of black polish (no. 039) to the whole nail.

Step 3. Apply matte top coat (no. 304) instead of the normal one.

Step 4. Create your chosen pattern using black art liner.

Army nails

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of base coat.

Step 2. Apply no. 458 to the nails you want to be green and no. 465 (beige) polish to the nails that will feature the army camouflage pattern.

Step 3. Create the army camouflage pattern using no. 458 (green), no. 463 (brown) and no. 039 (black).
Tip! If you think the brushes are too thick to work with, use our nail art brush instead.

Step 4. Apply matte top coat (no. 304) instead of the normal one.

Two colour mix

Step 1. Apply a thin layer of base coat.

Step 2. Apply no. 460 (green) and no. 454 (grey) to whichever nails you want. On one nail, apply both colours equally – 50/50.

Step 4. Use black art liner for the beetle’s head and legs.

Step 5. Add rhinestones to the beetle’s body.

Step 6. Finish with top coat.
